Types of New York City Apartments

 

The terminology used to describe various types and sizes of the apartments in Manhattan is quite diverse and specific. Some are universal and easy to understand, others are innovative and purely regional. In many cases, the same term can refer to two extremely different apartments. The following glossary is meant to aid you in your search, clarifying the terms currently used in the Manhattanapartment rentals .

 

Studios

Studio represents a one-room apartment with separate bath. In some cases studios in NYC include separate kitchen, bud usually it is not separated with the room. Size of the studios may vary. Alcove Studio

Convertible 2, 3, 4

Convertible indicates that apartment has an alcove off the living room or an extra space that could be converted into another bedroom. Integer indicates the number of rooms it can be converted to. Alcove might be converted into numbers of different rooms (the only limit is your imagination), often they are not converted at all and are used as a living room.

One-Bedrooms

One-bedroom apartment literally states that it has one bedroom which is separated from the living area. It also may include separated kitchen, sometimes even with additional space for dining. Size of these apartments varies. This type of apartment is a very good deal for a single or spouses living in Manhattan.

Loft apartments are usually with big, open space. This type of apartment is generally converted from a commercial building. Almost always have high ceilings and large windows. Mostly found in commercial neighborhoods of the New York City.

OTHER COMMON TERMS

+Dining room

An addition to the kitchen used for dining. Apartments not indicating separate dining area state that kitchen space is not enough to use it for dining also. Nevertheless, many NYC dwellers use living area as a dining space in many cases.

+Maid's room

An additional room for permanent maid, it may also include a separate bathroom in some cases. Maid’s rooms are mostly found in apartments within Townhouse and Brownstone buildings. One vacant bedroom of the 4+-bedroom apartment can also be used as a maid’s room.

+Office space

Separate room or area that can be used as an office, for business uses, etc. A must have area for businessmen frequently planning meetings at home.

+Sleep Loft

This is and add-on structure usually found in apartments with high ceilings, it usually holds a double size mattress, thus very comfortable for sleep. Sleeping loft is very prevalent among NYC apartments. These are widely used as additional bedrooms, or in case if apartment does not have a separate bedroom a resident can always use sleeping loft instead.

Good for Share

This term indicates that apartment is convenient enough to share with roommate, will generally include at least two bedrooms with an isolated entrance to each one. Sharing an apartment in NYC is a very common practice, especially for young people, students, etc. Furthermore, apartment sharing has number of prevailing superior characteristics such as divided apartment fee, friendly companion, etc.
