Building Types

Walkup

A walkup is a building having two or more floors (usually not more than 4-5) with no elevator. The absence of elevator is of course lack of comfort when you are living on the higher floors, but on the other hand walkup buildings have their own charm and that is why they are very popular in NYC apartment rent listings.

Elevator

An elevator building is usually nine floors in height, although some high rises may have up to 20. Elevator adds comfort to the dweller/tenant if living on the higher floors. Majority of the elevator buildings are situated in midblocks. Some buildings may even support laundry service. Brownstone

These types of buildings are usually three to six floors in height, dating from 1800s. Brownstones have a façade made out of large slabs of light-brown sand. Many of them remain one-family houses, but most brownstones in Manhattan have been converted into condo buildings housing several apartments making it convenient for rent. Brownstones are found throughout the NYC, thus, renting one in certain area should not be a problem.

Townhouse

Townhouses are somewhat similar to brownstones. They have similar height and are built in same period. Townhouses are usually two or more floors, usually are made of brick, and they share at least one wall with another residence, but that does not create any discomfort to the dweller since the walls are thick enough. Most townhouses have working fireplaces and lovely moldings , making it a perfect Manhattan apartment to rent.
